Review of My Sassy Girl (American version)

I just finished watching the American Version of My Sassy Girl and I thought about writing a review for those who were curious about how it fares against the original Korean version. (SPOILER ALERT). The American version stars Elisha Cuthbert as Jordan Roark (aka "the Girl" played by Jun Ji-hyun in the Korean version) and Jesse Bradford as Charlie Bellow (aka Gyeon-woo played by chaTae-Hyun). As far as the original Korean version I absolotuley loved it. It is by far my best romantic/comedy hands down. The Americans try to capitalize on the success of the Korean version and tries to bring it to the American audience as they had done to Shall We Dance, The Magnificent Seven (aka The Seven Samari's), and countless other movies. Instead of appearing in the theater's it was released on DVD.

First the Good: SPOILER ALERT

The American version does a pretty good job in trying to stay true to the original Korean version. They incorporate several of the major scenes (The Subway, the death of the cousin/fiancee, the interruption at his school, the birthday at the amusement park, Jordan's/the girl's obsession with writing sci-fi, the rose given to Jordan/the Girl at her piano recital, the exchanging of shoes, her attitude "or sass", meeting the other date where the main guy tells the date 10 things to make her happy, the exchanging of letters with the idea of not seeing each other for a year, and several others. The American version even plays homage to the Korean when there is a marching band in the Subway while they play Pachlabel's Canon. There are also moments where Jordan/the Girl plays off the sassiness pretty well. What the Americans did really well was when Jordan/the Girl is narrating her letter to Charlie. She explains why she acts the way she does towards Charlie and how she tried to make her fiance live again through him. Especially the reason why Charlie fell into the water after Jordan wondered how deep the water is (hinting to the original as well). It is revealed that her fiance/Charlie's cousing committed suicide by drowning there. Charlie falls in and Jordan resuces her, just like the original. But in the American version Jordan explains that she was acting the way she does to make her fiance live agian and by jumping into the water she was rescuing her fiance and saving his life. This was done rather well. It is explained really well, much better than the Korean version.

The Bad: SPOILER ALERT

Where do I start...The acting was really really really bad. The biggest hurdle that the American version had to overcome was how do you make Elisha Cuthbert not seem like a B#!@*. They were not successful. You watch her and you just think what a psychotic, bi-polar, egotistical, mean-spirited, B#!@*. The American audience would not be able to understand the Korean girl mentality (please don't ask me to explain that), but my Asian friends out there know what I'm talking about. There were several scenes that made me love the Korean version. The American version does not do the original justice when they try to renac them. Let me explain: Ariel's fav. scene #1: The jail cell. Charlie went to jail only once and you didn't even see the other prisoners! Fav scene #2: The Rose/recital scene. Charlie comes off as this creepy guy who interrupts the recital. You just didn't feel the chemistry between the two there. The original version you have Gyeon-woo in disguise and walks into the hall filled with women (which the Americans keep). But you just didn't feel the connection nor the love between the two characters. This scene was butchered. Even Jordan playing Canon didn't save the scene. Fav scene #3. Meeting the other date/Subway chase. This was my favorite scene of all time....even more than any thing that I have watched in Star Wars or Star Trek. Gyeon-woo explains to her date about how to make her happy. The music in the background and the way that the camera rotated and how Gyeon-woo/the Girl were sitting down, to her chasing after him and missing him made really made this my favorite scene. In the American version it was absolutely decimated. Again, no chemistry. They had to add in these stupid little one liners here and there. Fav scene #4. the Girl goes to the tree several years later to read Gyeon-woo's letter. The exchange between her and the old man was very poetic. The tree that was there is not the same tree. It's new because Gyeon-woo refused to allow it to die because one day the Girl would come and miss it. This is allegorical to their relationship. In the American version the Old Man comes off as a creepy pedophile. The scene attempts to keep the poetic dialogue but for some reason Jordan makes these stupid comments!!! Fav scene #5 The Ending. Butchered! Why? Because they kiss. That's right, in the original they hardly showed any PDA to one another. Here they kissed....in front of his aunt!!!!The original Korean version also had a poetic statement. the Girl always said that she would one day meet a man from the future, who happens to be Gyeon-woo. When Jordan says that exact line it seemed awkward. Fav scene(s) #6. In the original Korean version both Gyeon-woo and the Girl match their outfits. If one is wearing green, the other would wear it also. they were subtle hints to show that they were an item and the main focus of our attention. That was not found in the American version. Little things like that speak volumes about the director.

There are also several little scenes/dialogue that was omitted that I wished they kept. I knew going into this movie I was going to be very critical. I was not disappointed with the American version. They should've just not redone it. From what I heard they showed a screening of it and about 20 minutes in the majority of the people watching it left. It had it's moments, but for those who have not watched the Korean version will find the American version really confusing. Please do not buy it or rent it. Just borrow it from me. If you want to watch a really good romantic comedy watch Pushing Daisies!

Just watched Best of the Best for the first time last night...I really don't see what the hype was all about. Made me think about my favorite and least favorite movies in my opinion

Top 10 WORST movies

  1. Best of the Best - This is absolutely horrible!!!!
  2. Doogle - Some strange relationship this dog has with his owner....
  3. Mummy 3 - Yeti???!!!
  4. Star Wars Episode 1 - Two words for you: Jar-Jar
  5. Camp Rock - Who cares about the Jonas' brothers?
  6. Saving Private Ryan - Based loosely on the Niland brothers who fought in WW2. With a stunning opening sequence, the movie quickly goes down hill and ends with the worst possible lines "Did I earn it?" C'mon!!
  7. Sidekicks - Even the great Chuck Norris couldn't save this movie from martial arts cliches
  8. Stealth - Jessica Biel as a combat pilot? That's almost as believable as Paris Hilton as a role model
  9. Pearl Harbor - A love story in which the Japanese interrupts
  10. Titanic - A love story in which an Ice Berg interrupts

Top 10 BEST movies

  1. Harry Potter Series - Couldn't pick from the 5 of them so I bunched them all together
  2. The original Star Wars Trilogy - Close 2nd place...
  3. Old Boy - Such a twisted story that still haunts me...thanks Edify!!!
  4. A Bridge Too Far - Based on Cornelius Ryan's 1977 book on the retelling of Operation Market Garden. This is a wonderful story of how bad leadership and planning cost thousands of lives.
  5. Tora Tora Tora -  Amazing recreation of the attack on Pearl Harbor produced by both American and Japanese film makers
  6. Serenity - the movie edition to the short lived television show Firefly. Will there be more??? Please let it be!!!
  7. Star Trek 2: Wrath of Khan - KHAN!!!!
  8. Braveheart - "i'm gonna pick a fight!"
  9. Lord of the Ring: Two Towers - Awesome!
  10. Clue - Always amazed at the writing and acting of this movie

Victoria Osteen's Best Life Now

I stumbled across this article from Foxnews.com, and on the Foxnews network...

"HOUSTON —  The wife of renowned evangelical pastor Joel Osteen acted like a combative diva when a small spill on her airline seat was not immediately cleaned up, a flight attendant who was also on the plane testified Thursday.

The testimony came during the civil trial of a lawsuit that accuses Victoria Osteen, the co-pastor a Houston megachurch, of assaulting a flight attendant before the start of a 2005 flight to Vail, Colo.

Continental Airlines flight attendant Sharon Brown alleges Victoria Osteen threw her against a bathroom door and elbowed her in the left breast during an angry outburst over some spilled liquid on her first-class seat. Brown claims Victoria Osteen became so upset she tried to get into the cockpit and had to be physically restrained.

Brown's co-worker, Maria Johnson, confirmed that in her testimony Thursday.

"She took Sharon by the shoulders and pushed her out of the way. Sharon stumbled," Johnson said

Rusty Hardin, Victoria Osteen's attorney, said earlier Thursday the lawsuit is simply a money grab. /**/

"This is nothing more than an attempted extortion," Hardin told jurors during opening statements.

Johnson testified that before Victoria Osteen tried to get in the cockpit, she became increasingly agitated while she and Brown remained professional and reassured her a crew had been called to clean the spill, which was about the size of a 50-cent piece.

"She was demanding that attention be given to her immediately," Johnson said.

Johnson told jurors that Victoria Osteen kept saying: "This is ridiculous. I'm a first-class passenger."

Brown's attorney, Reginald McKamie, told jurors during his opening statement that his client was simply doing her job.

"Sharon was attacked by someone in the community who supposedly represents a higher degree of human decency," he said.

Brown's suit claims the flight attendants asked to have Victoria Osteen removed from the plane. Hardin told jurors Victoria Osteen and her family left voluntarily. The incident delayed the flight about 2 1/2 hours.

Hardin admitted that Victoria Osteen can be a "very excitable and expressive person," but that she was never out of control.

"Victoria Osteen never attacked her, never tried to get in the cockpit," Hardin said. "The aggressor and the person who was out of control, who flipped out, was Ms. Brown."

About 42,000 people flock to Lakewood Church every week to hear Victoria Osteen's husband Joel Osteen, whose weekly television address is broadcast nationally and internationally and whose books have been sold across the globe.

The Osteens were both expected to testify during the trial.

Brown wants an apology and punitive damages amounting to 10 percent of Victoria Osteen's net worth as part of her suit.

"They will say this is about money. But that is the only remedy a jury can offer," McKamie said.

McKamie said Brown, who had undergone reconstructive surgery before the incident on her breasts due to illness, was injured when she was hit on her chest. Brown also suffers from anxiety because of the incident and that her faith was affected, her attorney said. Brown is also suing Victoria Osteen for medical expenses for counseling.

But Hardin told jurors there is no evidence Brown sustained any injuries, including claims she now suffers from hemorrhoids.

The Federal Aviation Administration fined Victoria Osteen $3,000 for interfering with a crew member.

Hardin told jurors Victoria Osteen paid the FAA fine not because she was guilty but as a way to conclude the matter and avoid any embarrassment for her church."

After reading this article and the news piece on TV I just find ths disgraceful...

There was this man that used to come in to VBB every so often who had been a great encouragement in my life. His name was Fred Flroes (no relation). He was a charistmatic Christian who loved RC Sproul, Packer and Piper. Isn't that interesting. Well, whenever he would come in he would ask me if I listened to the recent episode(s) of Renewing Your Mind, and we would discuss them.

Fred was a painted. All his life he has painted murals on buildings. Most of us living in the San Fernando Valley would recognize one of his favorites. As you head south on Balboa there is a small church on the Westside of the street right before you hit Target. There is a mural of Jesus walking on water. I asked him about this years ago and he mentioned that he never wanted to paint Jesus' face because we don't know what He looked like. He wanted to capture the moment as Jesus walked towards His bewildered disciples.

I stopped seeing him around when I moved down to Escondido. When I came back to work for the summer time last year he stopped by with his wife. He rememberd me and we continued talking about Sproul and Reformed Theology, which he was interested in learning more about. His health  was failing him because of all the chemicals he had inhaled through the years. He wrote me a hand written letter in November telling me his inspirations of painting and his love for Christ. He also encouraged me to contnue in the race, to keep the faith. I always told myself to write back, but I pushed it aside telling myself that "i'll get to it."

Fred died last month of a sudden heart attack. He was 81 when he died. I never had the chance to write back. If there is any disappointments and regrets that I have in life it is this: I never had the change to tell him thank you. I know now that he is in the hands of our Savior, no longer needing an oxygen tank to breathe. He no longer has to wait for the coming day of the Lord, for Fred is with him now. He is enjoying the full benefits of Christ Himself. Fred no longer has to guess what Jesus looks like. The Savior's face that he refused to paint is no longer hidden from Fred. I shall miss him.

I am reminded of the last book in the Chronicles of Narnia. When the children have died and Aslan sees them, Aslan tells the children "now your real life begins." Fred's, and all other saints that are with Christ have begun their true life and that is with Christ Himself. I envy him.
